RRSO XIV (2016)

Welcome to the "REAL" Red River Shootout (RRSO).  As all serious chess players know, this is the annual team match between the most fanatical chess players in Oklahoma and Texas.

Since the first match on April 27, 2003, 652 tough chess games have been contested by a total of 288 players in sixteen matches and other RRSO events.  The stakes are high for both teams and Oklahoma is determined to change its fortunes RRSO XVII.

Texas has the title as well as possession of the Frank Kim Berry RRSO Trophy.  Texas also has custody of the "original" Famous Traveling Trophy.  Finally, Texas leads the series 10 to 6 despite playing on the road fifteen out of sixteen times.

RRSO XVII recruiting season begins on 15 January 2019.  The best way to get on the match section rosters is contact your Team Captain without delay and say:  "Hey Captain!  I am in!"

RRSO XVII (this coming year) has three important changes

  1. Match Pairings announced the morning of, not before.
  2. Round One Games will be adjourned around the 3-hour mark to ensure everyone has an opportunity for lunch and to keep Round Two on schedule.
  3. New email for Chief Organizer and TD: rrsochess@gmail.com
See details below.

     Good luck Everyone!

Oklahoma Seeks Revenge!

NOTE: The BRAZOS recruiting system used last year worked well. We filled 26 match section boards by asking interested players to register for a spot on the team in advance, and then the team captains paired them with a similar-rated registrant on the opposing team to guarantee a well balanced team match. We also recruited qualified substitutes for the Murray County Open, just in case.

HERE'S HOW THIS WORKS FOR RRSO XVII: To play in the Match Section, you must register with your Team Captain no later than Friday, 21 April 2019. The Team Captains will review and approve the Team Rosters with the Chief TD. The official Team Match Pairings will be final on Saturday, 22 April 2019. Because of past complaints that not enough Texas games are online, the rosters won't be announced until the morning of.

Your best chance for playing in the Match Section for RRSO XVII is to ensure your US Chess membership is current through 30 April 2019 (or later) and REGISTER with the Chief TD and your Team Captain EARLY.

We will need substitutes. We draw those from the Murray County Open. Two days prior, we will notify all players who are in the Murray County Open. All walk-ins are welcome to play in the Murray County Open.

Again, register early so we have more time to find a suitable opponent for you.
